Episode 10: baby's routine, postpartum exercise, working & breastfeeding

I am a mother

Recently you became a mother, congratulations! Peace, regularity, and rhythm are probably still hard to find. That's okay and normal. Here are the last tips and tricks we want to share with you.

In short

  • Babies cry an average of about 2 hours per day.
  • It's also advisable to train your pelvic floor muscles after a cesarean section.
  • You can become pregnant again without having had a period. So, remember contraception!

Baby crying

Most babies cry the most between 2 and 10 weeks of age, averaging around two hours a day. Crying is a normal part of their development and is their way of communicating their needs. Establishing a calm routine with regular feeding, sleeping, and comforting can often help reduce excessive crying.

How to prevent incontinence

After pregnancy and childbirth, your pelvic floor needs attention to recover. During pregnancy, the muscles become softer, and during birth they are stretched. Pelvic floor exercises help strengthen and restore these muscles. Research shows that pelvic floor muscle training can have a positive effect on preventing (stress) incontinence later in life.

Train your pelvic floor

Taking a course for new mothers can help you learn which exercises you can do and motivate you to actually practise every day. Make sure you keep this up for several months! Are you still experiencing symptoms? Visit a physiotherapist who specialises in pelvic floor issues, for example at our location in Noord.

Returning to exercise after childbirth

It is not only your pelvic floor that needs to recover; your entire body needs time to heal after pregnancy and childbirth. During the first few weeks, this mainly requires plenty of rest (lying down) and good nutrition.

Returning to exercise after 6 weeks

After around 6 weeks, most women are ready to start exercising again and begin rebuilding their fitness and muscle strength. Take it slowly and listen to any signals or limits your body may be giving you.

Abdominal muscles

Carrying your baby

In many cultures, mothers carry their babies much more often than many of us are used to. These babies often sleep better, feel more secure, experience fewer tummy aches and cry less. In addition, babywearing can be a great solution for giving yourself more freedom of movement while keeping your little one close.

Contraception

It varies from woman to woman when the menstrual cycle starts again. This can happen as early as 4–6 weeks after giving birth, which means you can become pregnant again. Breastfeeding usually delays the return of your period for several months. However, you do not know when your first period will occur, and therefore you cannot know when you are fertile again. This is because your first ovulation occurs about two weeks before your first menstruation. So, make sure you always use contraception if you do not (yet) want to become pregnant again.

After childbirth, it varies from woman to woman when she feels ready for sexual contact again. Breastfeeding hormones can also affect your libido. Give yourself time; a lot has changed, and your body needs time to recover.

Choosing contraception

There are different forms of contraception. Take the time to learn about your options before making a choice. Read Read more reliable information and tips to help you make an informed decision.

It is important to know that the combined pill and the NuvaRing contain hormones that may affect the amount and quality of breast milk. Therefore, we do not recommend using these methods during the breastfeeding period.

Contraception consultation

Since 2014, midwives have been authorised to prescribe oral contraceptives and fit contraceptive coils (IUDs). This is a logical continuation of the information and advice we provide about contraception during the postnatal period. We believe it is a positive development for women who have given birth that they can come to us for this care. Our midwives have therefore completed additional training and set up a contraception consultation service.

Call 020-2103170 if you would like more information about contraception in general, or if you would like to make an appointment to have an IUD fitted by a midwife. We recommend having an IUD fitted approximately 10 weeks after giving birth.

Back to work and breastfeeding

Most women return to work around 3 months after giving birth. If you are still breastfeeding, you are entitled to spend up to a quarter of your working hours expressing milk or breastfeeding your baby. Your employer is required to provide a suitable private space where you can do this. Some women prefer not to express milk, but gradually reduce the number of feeds they give. This way, a baby can often still receive a substantial amount of breast milk before and after work each day. Do you have questions about expressing milk, feeding routines, or reducing feeds? Please contact a lactation consultant.

Centering Pregnancy reunion day

After the birth of your baby, there is one final session with your Centering Pregnancy group. Once everyone has given birth, we come together one more time. This session focuses on your physical and emotional recovery. How are you adjusting to parenthood? Are you finding time to rest? Do you feel that your body is recovering? If you wish, we can check your abdominal muscles and, if needed, look at how your wound is healing. We are also interested in how your experience of giving birth has influenced the way you look back on it, and there is plenty of space for you to share your story. Only after this session is the circle complete, and we end our care when you feel ready to do so. Your wellbeing is our priority. If you need a physical check-up sooner, you are always welcome to visit us at the practice.

and more..

For partners

It can take several months before your partner’s libido returns. You can make your partner pregnant again before she has had her first period, so always use contraception unless you are hoping for another pregnancy straight away.
